Simon's sister Beth is a spirited, independent woman who has a developmental disability known as mental retardation. Cool Beth, as she calls herself, rides the buses all day, every day, finding a sense of community and connection she has never known before. At the invitation of her sister, Simon spends a year riding with Beth and along the way explores self-determination, discrimination, sibling relationships and the importance of friends. Riding the Bus with My Sister chronicles Simon's life-changing experiences during that year. Cool
Beth’s Community on the Move graphically describes an umbrella campaign
of local organizations interested in promoting the messages of community
inclusion and independence for people with disabilities found in Simon’s
book. Convened by Special Transit, additional partners in the Cool Beth’s Community on the Move
campaign include Boulder
Valley School District, GO
Boulder/city of Boulder, Boulder
Public Library, Center for People With
Disabilities, Boulder
East — Community Transportation Options and Imagine!. The campaign aims to raise
the community's awareness of the issues of self-advocacy and self-determination for people with disabilities and for seniors. Self-determination
is a concept that means that people with disabilities should have the same choices as all
citizens — if Beth wants to live on her own, she should have that choice.
Self-advocacy is about feeling good about yourself, living life fully,
thinking for yourself and working collectively for social change. In the book,
Beth has created her own social universe in a creative way. Through this
campaign, the participating organizations have elected to support Cool Beth
and her message about the importance of choosing your own life. |
